Jalan Hang Jebat, Kuala Lumpur (12 July 2017)
Jalan Hang Jebat is a street in downtown
Kuala Lumpur. It runs from Jalan Sultan in the west to
Jalan Hang Tuah in the east. In between, it forms junctions with
Lorong Hang Jebat and Jalan Wesley on the north side, and with Jalan Stadium and Jalan Kenanga on the south side.
Jalan Hang Jebat was originally known as Davidson Road. It was named after James Guthrie Davidson
1, who served as the first British Resident of Perak in 1875, and as British Resident of Perak from 11 April 1876 to 31 March 1877
2, following the assassination of J.W.W. Birch. He is probably
1,3 the nephew of Alexander Guthrie, the founder of Guthrie & Co., a Malayan plantation company that is today part of Sime Darby. Failing health forced him to resign from his post as Resident of Perak, after which he set up the legal firm of Rodyk and Davidson in Singapore.
