Jalan Munshi Abdullah (15 June, 2017)
Jalan Munshi Abdullah is a road in downtown
Kuala Lumpur. It is a one-way street running from south to north, beginning at its junction with
Jalan Ampang, and ending at its junction with
Jalan Dang Wangi. Along its route it forms junctions with minor roads such as
Jalan Bunus, Lorong Bunus 3, Lorong Bunus 6 and
Persiaran Capsquare. Much of the land on the east side of Jalan Munshi Abdullah was developed since the 1990s into an urban redevelopment called
Capital Square.
Jalan Munshi Abdullah was named after the Malacca-born scribe, Abdullah bin Abdul Kader 1797-1854). With his fluency in Malay and English, he found employment with Stamford Raffles, for whom he worked as scribe and copywriter. Munshi Abdullah is best recognized for his role in uplifting the image of Malay literature. It was he who documented the events around the demolition of the Malacca Fort by the British, during the interim when the Dutch had to vacate the town.
