Sekolah Kebangsaan Convent Jalan Peel (GPS: 3.13179, 101.72013) is a major secondary school for girls in Kuala Lumpur. As its name suggests, it is located along Jalan Peel.
SK Convent Jalan Peel traces its history to 1949. It was founded by the nuns calling themselves the Sisters of Bukit Nanas Convent. The school is a branch of Convent Bukit Nanas. It was established when the original school could no longer cope with the increasing number of pupils.
The first year of school was 1949, when there were six classes for 40 pupils in Standard 1 and 2. Sister St. Catherine Hendriks was the first headmistress of the school. At that time, it was merely a cluster of attap huts built on former mining land. However expansion was in the cards, and by 1951, a new building with 16 classrooms was completed. The headmistress then was Sister St. John Bosco.
The number of pupils continued to rise, exceeding a thousand by 1957, forcing the school to divide into a morning and an afternoon session. Apart from four classes for Primary 1 and 2, which remain at Jalan Peel, School One relocated to Sekolah Rendah Abu Bakar on Jalan Pasar while School Two to Sekolah St Gabrields on Jalan Perwira. This move lasted for a year, after which the majority of the pupils returned to Jalan Peel, while the remainer continued their studies at SRK Kampung Pandan, which was now known as SK Putri Pandan.
Today the number of students has declined from the peak attained in the 1950s. It now has about 700 pupils and 40 teachers.
Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.
While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
