Chee Mansion (GPS: 2.19631, 102.24511), also called Chee Yam Chuan Temple, is a palatial mansion at No. 117 Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock in Malacca. The namesake, Chee Swee Cheng 徐垂青, is often called Baba Chee as he is the sixth generation to be born in the Malay peninsula. His family is also one of the oldest in Malacca. By the time Chee Swee Cheng was born on 13 December, 1866, his family has become one of the richest in town, with business enterprises extending far and wide. Chee who became a tycoon in his own right, served as the first chairman of the Overseas Chinese Banking Corporation, OCBC.

Chee Swee Cheng is a Hokkien. His forefather Chee Soo Sum (1689-1752) left Zhangzhou prefecture in Fujian Province, China to seek his fortune in Malacca1. This followed the collapse of the Ming Dynasty to the Manchus, which resulted in mass departure of refugees to Southeast Asia, taking advantage of the Hokkien's maritime knowledge.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
