Makam Tok Kepau, Sungai Rambai, Malacca (16 September 2016)
Makam Tok Kepau (GPS: 2.12465, 102.50051) is an 18th century grave in Sungai Rambai, Malacca. It is the grave of Tok Kepau @ Daeng Kepau bin Daeng Janung, the founder of Sungai Rambai.
Tok Kepau was born in the Riau islands of Indonesia. When the Sultanate of Riau Lingga fell into the hands of the Dutch on 1 November 1784, Tok Kepau led a group of refugees out of Riau. Some of these refugees settled at Pulau Penyengat, while Tok Kepau and his followers sailed up Sungai Kesang to a site where there were wild rambai trees growing by a creek that flowed into Sungai Kesang. There, he founded his settlement, which became known as Sungai Rambai.
Tok Kepau's son Daeng Khamis @ Tok Khamis was wedded to Raja Munah @ Fatimah, the daughter of Raja Ali. Tok Kepau passed away in 1848. He was buried in the graveyard which eventually also held the remains of his daughter-in-law Raja Munah.
Tok Kepau's graveyard was gazetted as a historical site in 2014 under the Preservation and Conservation of Cultural Heritage Enactment 1988.
Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.
While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
