Melaka Raya is a place within
Malacca Town. It was created in the 1980's through land reclamation of the coast. The result of the reclamation is that that coast is now extended out, pushing former island coastal villages such as the
Portuguese Settlement.
Melaka Raya today is a strip of commercial development that includes shopping malls such as Plaza Melaka Raya and Mahkota Parade. There are also condominiums and hotels in the Melaka Raya area.
The development of Melaka Raya has effectively changed the face of Malacca Town, making it more urban than before. The downside to this development is that it has also affected the livelihood of fishermen whose villages were once along the coast, and are now cut off from the sea.
