Gemas (GPS: 2.58138, 102.61174) is a small town in
Negri Sembilan. It is quite near to the border with
Johor. This is the location of the
Gemas Railway Station, where the West Coast railway line meets the East Coast line.
There is nothing of interest in this otherwise sleepy town. The nearest sight to Gemas is
Gunung Ledang, which is in neighbouring Johor.
If you are interested in World War II history, Gemas was the site of fierce battle between the Japanese and Australian soldiers (2/30 Battalion, 8 Division of the Australian Imperial Force) which took place at Gemencheh Bridge in 1942. The ambush staged by the Australians claimed over a thousand lives on the Japanese side and fifty for the Australians. A memorial, the
Kelamah River Memorial, is erected to the fallen Australian soldier where the Gemencheh Bridge is located, off Federal Route 1.
