Holy Trinity Church (GPS: 4.47929, 101.03247) is the principal Anglican church in Batu Gajah. It is located at Jalan Hospital, across from the Batu Gajah Prison, and a short walk from the Batu Gajah Hospital.
The Anglican movement arrived in Batu Gajah not long after the village was established, and about the same time as the arrival of the Roman Catholics. While it cannot be ascertained for sure when exactly the Anglicans started their earliest mission effort in the Kinta Valley, by early 18841, missionary was was being carried out with the support of the Society of Propagation of Gospel (SPG), with the responsibility of overseeing the ministry held by the First Chaplain Reverend A. Markham (1884-1897) of the All Saints Church of Taiping. Nevertheless, the person who established the Anglican church in Batu Gajah is believed to be Reverent F.S.P. Pyemont (1891-1904), also of the All Saints Church.
Land for the proposed Anglican church was granted by the 28th Sultan of Perak, Sultan Idris Murshidul Azam Shah. The first structure may have been erected around 1887, while a more permanent one in 1895. It was the second Anglican Church building in the Federated Malay States after the All Saint's Church in Taiping, and it heralded the penetration of the Anglican faith in the country.
In the early days, most of the worshippers at the Holy Trinity Church were Europeans. But as the locals were converted, the number of Chinese and Tamil worshippers increased substantially, outnumbering the Europeans by 1918.
Today the Holy Trinity Church as been modernised a number of times. It continues to serve the Anglican community of Batu Gajah. Worship services at at 9:00 am on Sundays, while Praise & Worship healing service is at 7:30 pm on Fridays.
Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
