Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun (GPS: 4.60407, 101.09014) is the general hospital for
Ipoh, Perak. It occupies a sprawling complex off
Jalan Raja Ashman Shah. Today it is the third largest general hospital in the country, behind
Hospital Kuala Lumpur and
Hospital Pulau Pinang. It has 990 beds as well as 16 operating theatres, 16 beds in the intensive care unit, 8 beds for heart treatment, 16 beds for pediatric intensive care unit and 20 beds for neonatal care.
Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun traces its beginnings to 1891, when it was established as the district hospital, called Ipoh Hospital, with just 50 beds. It was upgraded to become the Perak Hospital in 1942.
The present main building of Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun was completed in 1980. On 12 June, 2008, the Ipoh Hospital was renamed Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun (1932-), after the former Raja Permaisuri of Perak, mother of the present Sultan Nazrin Shah.
