Ipoh Padang (23 January, 2011)
Ipoh Padang (GPS: 4.59922, 101.07674) is the playing field at the heart of
Ipoh Old Town. Also called the
Ipoh Field, it is bordered by Jalan S.P. Seenivasagam in the north and
Jalan Sultan Yusuf in the south.
Jalan Tun Sambanthan forms part of its southern boundary. On the western side of the field is the
Royal Ipoh Club.
Unlike many public fields in the towns of Malaya, which were mostly put up by the administrators for civic activities, the Ipoh Field was created to commemorate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. The persons instrumental in this were two prominent members of the local society, C.G. Ogivile and G.J. Penny, who was the manager of the Straits Trading Company Batu Gajah. Their initiative received the support from the Chinese mining community, which chipped in with a $43,000 contribution.
