Jalan Datuk Onn Jaafar is one of the main roads in downtown Ipoh. It is a one-way road running from south to north. Jalan Datuk Onn Jaafar starts at the junction with Jalan C.M. Yusuf and ends at the junction with Jalan Raja Musa Aziz. As it cuts right across town, it intersects with most of the parallel roads in the Ipoh New Town, including Jalan Masjid, Jalan Sultan Iskandar, Jalan Yau Tet Shin, Tingkat Pasar, Jalan Theatre, Jalan Mustapa Al-Bakri, Taman Jubilee, Jalan Foo Choo Choon, Jalan Sultan Idris Shah, Jalan Foo Yet Kai and Jalan Lim Bo Seng.
Jalan Datuk Onn Jaafar was formerly named Cockman Street, after Herbert James Cockman, who was a major in the Federated Malay States Volunteer Force during the Second World War. His name replaced that of Japanese Admiral Tōgō Heihachirō, regarded one of Japan's greatest naval heroes of the early 20th century, before the Second World War. However, the Japanese atrocities during the Second World War and the ensuing animosity towards Japan led to the renaming of the road to honour Cockman. The road underwent another name change, to honour Dato' Ann Ja'afar, the founder of the Malay political party UMNO.
Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
