Jalan Foo Choo Choon, Ipoh (10 March, 2018)
Jalan Foo Choo Choon is a minor road in downtown
Ipoh, Perak. It is a one-way street that connects
Jalan Datuk Onn Jaafar to
Jalan Laxamana. The road was named in honour of Hakka tin miner
Foo Choo Choon, who was one of the richest Chinese in the world.
Among the philanthrophic works involving Foo Choo Choon was in defraying the cost for the construction of the
Anglo-Chinese School, Ipoh, in 1904. He also donated the Primary Hall as a gift to the school.
Along with two other benefactors, he also donated $6,000 towards the purchase of the land for the
Anglo-Chinese School, Penang, at
Maxwell Road in Penang, as well as in helping to establish the
Chung Hua School, Penang.
Foo Choo Choon was made the president of the
Penang Chinese Town Hall in 1906, and the Perak Chinese Chamber of Commerce in 1913. He was also appointed to the Perak State Council and Perak Chinese Advisory Board.
