Jalan Sultan Yusuf Heritage Row, Ipoh (19 August, 2006)
Jalan Sultan Yusuf Heritage Row (GPS: 4.5963, 101.07708) is a term I gave to a row of shophouses along
Jalan Sultan Yusuf, formerly Belfield Street, in Ipoh, approaching the junction with Jalan Dato Sagor. The buildings numbered 128 to 136 are particularly attractive, with stucco embellishments to their façades and elaborate pediments.
One of these buildings was occupied by Jan S.A. Sahib, an Indian Muslim who had come to Malaya from
Chennai, India, and became a pillar of the local Indian Muslim community. He served as a trustee of the
Indian Muslim Mosque as well as on the Kinta Sanitary Board. Mr Sahib was appointed a J.P. in 1935.
The beautiful row on Jalan Sultan Yusuff has unfortunately seen better times when I photographed it. Since then, I am glad to note that many of these houses have been restored and given a fresh new coat of paint.
