Jalan Daeng Selili is one of the main roads in Kuala Kangsar, Perak. Part of Federal Route 1, it connects the Kuala Kangsar Clock Tower Roundabout in the south to the intersection with Jalan Besar Utara Selatan, Jalan Raja Idris and Sultan Abdul Jalil Shah Bridge.
Jalan Daeng Selili is named after the honorific title for Bugis prince from Sulawesi, who lived in Perak during the reign of Sultan Mudzaffar Shah III (1728-1752). Daeng Selili is not his actual name, but rather his honorific title, based on his brotherhood with the district of Gunung Selili in Samarinda, East Kalimantan. His actual identity was concealed because he was wanted by the Dutch for having destroyed Dutch warships and cargo ships, so much so that the Dutch labelled him a pirate.
In 1743, he was bestowed the title of Haji Besar for his success in eradicating the pirates at Pulau Sembilan, and handing over the island to Sultan Mudzaffar Shah III.
Today Jalan Daeng Selili borders the western part of Kuala Kangsar Old Town.
Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.
While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
