Jalan Chin Ah Yam, Taiping (31 August 2015)
Jalan Chin Ah Yam is a minor road in
Taiping, Perak. It connects
Jalan Tupai to Jalan Peng Long. The road is almost a back lane today.
Jalan Chin Ah Yam was named after a historical figure in Taiping history. Chin Ah Yam (Traditional Chinese: 陳亞炎; Simplified Chinese: 陈亚炎) was a Hakka chief and leader of the Ghee Hin Society in the 1850s. As with his opponent Chung Keng Kwee, he too had his base in Penang, but was heavily involved in the affairs in the Larut District, which was then a booming tin-mining area. It was over the tin-mining rights that pit Chin Ah Yam against Chung Keng Kwee.
By the late 1880s, the influence of the Ghee Hin under Chin Ah Yam was waning, while that of the Hai San grew. Nevertheless, he was a signatory of the Pangkor Treaty of January 1874. He was given a seat in the Perak State Council and became Kapitan Chin Ah Yam.
Chin Ah Yam was the founder of the Kwantung Association and Ku Kong Association in Taiping. He died in 1899 and was buried at the Kwantung Cemetery in Tupai, Taiping.
