Ruins of The Residency in Taiping (1 July, 2007)
The Residency (GPS: 4.85886, 100.74892) are the ruins of a historic building in
Taiping, Perak. Located at the end of Jalan Esplanade, it is to be exact the
Assistant Resident's House. The locals of Taiping call it "Taiping's Stonehenge". That is because all that remains of the Residency are whitewashed pillars supporting a house that was long ago demolished.
According to a source I have on file
1, the Residency was built in 1884 at a cost of $19,000 (differing accounts places the construction in 1877, for Sir Hugh Low, and 1894), chalking up another first for Taiping, as the first town in the country to have an official residence for its Resident. It was a single-level building on stilts. It was pulled down when termites and elements made difficult to restore. However, the pillars were retained as a reminder of the house that was.
