Sultan Idris Education University (GPS: 3.68597, 101.52276), (Malay: Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris, Malay Jawi: اونيۏرسيتي ڤنديديقن سلطان إدريس) is a pedagogical university in
Tanjung Malim, Perak. It occupies a substantial piece of land on the east side of the Tanjung Malim main road, across from
SMK Methodist Tanjung Malim.
Sultan Idris Education University is one of the oldest teaching institution in Peninsular Malaysia. Its history goes back to 1913, when it was established within the
residence of Perak nobleman Ngah Ibrahim, and was originally called the Matang Teacher Training College, and was located in
Matang, just south of
Taiping.
In 1922, the Matang Teacher Training College was relocated to Tanjung Malim, and renamed in honour of
Sultan Idris Murshidul Azam Shah, the 28th Sultan of Perak, becoming the Sultan Idris Teacher College. Originally, the college only took on male students. It had its first intake of female students in 1976. In 1987, the college underwent another name change, becoming the Sultan Idris Teachers Institute. That was when it teamed up with Universiti Pertanian Malaysia (now called Universiti Putra Malaysia) to offer degree courses.
The Sultan Idris Teachers Institute was upgraded to a full university on 1 May, 1997, and is now called the Sultan Idris Education University. The campus of the university in Tanjung Malim is called the Sultan Abdul Jalil Campus.
