Tanjung Piandang Salted Fish Makers

Tanjung Piandang Salted Fish MakingSalted fish being laid out under the sun in Tanjung Piandang (29 August, 2015)

As Tanjung Piandang is a fishing village, you can find many houses there making salted fish. For city folks like me, I don't often get to see salted fish being laid out under the sun (the last time I saw that on Penang Island was at Sia Boey). To see the making of salted fish, you need to go to more rural places. You can consider Tanjung Piandang the backyard for Penang. Although it is in neighbouring Perak, the village is close enough that much of its fish is sent to Penang.

It is not difficult to find houses where salted fish is made. They are right along the main road of Tanjung Piandang (GPS: 5.07572, 100.38541). That road is called Jalan Pantai. A good place to view salted fish making is where the main road makes a sharp bend, in front of the Tanjung Piandang Chinese Temple. You can stop your car and walk around to see salted fish being laid out under the hot sun. Of course, you need to go at the right time of the day, particularly a hot, sunny one, so as to ensure the people are sunning the fish.

You will see various types of fish, as well as shrimps and cuttlefish, being laid out under the sun. It is an interesting sight, although to be honest, the smell of salted fish is overpowering. I am personally quite taken in by how neatly the fish were arranged on the sunning mat. They are all more or less of equal size, and forms silvery pattern like plates. You will see the fish at various stages of sunning. The fresh ones still hold their silvery colour, while those that have dried up and are almost ready to be collected are brownish.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
