Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta, Tanjung Rambutan, Perak

Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta (GPS: 4.67273, 101.1564) is a hospital for the mentally unsound. It is located on a 544 acre land in Tanjung Rambutan, a suburb of Ipoh, and is often known as the Tanjung Rambutan Hospital.

Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta was founded in 1910 under the suggestion of Dr W.F. Samuels. A plot of land in Tanjung Rambutan was identified for this purpose, and the hospital was built there under the name Federal Lunatic Asylum. Dr Samuels eventually served as its first medical superintendent. In the beginning, the asylum comprised three wards for male patients and one for female patients.

In 1928, the Federal Lunatic Asylum was renamed the Central Mental Hospital. In the early 1970's, the Central Mental Hospital was renamed yet again, to Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta, to shed its image as a mental asylum, and to promote a more positive outlook of its role as the centre for psychiatric treatment.

Today Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta is the biggest of the four pyschiatric institutions in Malaysia. It has 54 male wards and 25 female wards, offering accommodation to over two thousand inmates. The main objective of the hospital is to provide psychiatric treatment rather than simply to house those with mental disorders. It also offers psychiatric training to staff and medical students.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
