Masjid Lama (GPS: 6.42972, 100.27161) is an old mosque in Arau, the royal town of Perlis. It is located off the Arau main road (Perlis State Route R3), across the road from the new State Mosque of Perlis. The mosque was built between 1873 and 1897, during the reign of Raja Syed Ahmad Jamalullail. Arab and Malay artisans were employed in its construction.
Within the Masjid Lama is a hundred-year-old wooden pulpit. It was bought by the ruler, Raja Syed Saffi Jamalullail from Penang in 1905, brought up the river to Kangar, and taken on horse carriage to the mosque, where it is installed and is in use to this day.
Masjid Lama Arau (31 October, 2009)
The outstanding feature of the Masjid Lama is its architecture. The superstructure of the mosque is of bricks while the rest of the building was built of wood with a hip roof. There is a porch or verandah around the building. This was added after the initial construction. The mosque is surrounded by an old Malay cemetery.

About this website
Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.
While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
