Jalan Tun Fuad Stephen, Kota Kinabalu (6 May 2022)
Jalan Tun Fuad Stephen is a major road in
Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. This is a coastal road that skirts the waterfront. It connects Jalan Haji Saman in the north to the Jalan Kemajuan Roundabout in the south. From there, it continues as an unnamed new link road. Jalan Tun Fuad Stephen branches to
Jalan Enam Belas, Jalan Segama, Jalan Lapan Belas, Jalan Sembilan Belas, Lorong Gomantong 2, Jalan Sinsuran, Jalan Dua Puluh, and Lorong Plaza Warisan.
A second stretch of Jalan Tun Fuad Stephen starts at the Kota Kinabalu Port Roundabout and ends at Jalan UMS. Branching from the road include Jalan Jesselton, Jalan Tanjung Lipat, Jalan Signal Hill Park, Jalan Istiadat and Jalan Pasir.
Jalan Tun Fuad Stephen was built in the 1990s following land reclamation that extended the short outward to create new land for the present commercial heart of the city. The road was named after Muhammad Fuad Stephens, who was the 1st Chief Minister of Sabah from September 1963 to December 1964. He served again, as the 5th Chief Minister of Sabah, from April 1976 until his death in a plane crash in June 1976. In between, he also served as the 6th Malaysian High Commissioner to Australia from 1968 to 1973 and the 3rd Yang di-Pertua Negera of Sabah from September 1973 to July 1975. He was born Donald Aloysius Marmaduke Stephens on 14 September 1920 of mixed Kadazan and British parentage.
