Pulau Balambangan is an island located to the west of
Pulau Banggi and north of
Kudat. There are archaeological sites on this island.
Pulau Balambangan was occupied by Alexander Dalrymple of the British East India Company in 1761 following a treaty with the Sultan of Sulu. This resulted in a free port being established there. It was one of the first locations that the British had set up a base in Sabah. However incessant attacks by pirates prevented the port from becoming a successful trading centre.
Getting there
You can get packages to visit Pulau Balambangan by contacting a tour operator at Kudat, such as New Way Car Rental & Souvenir Centre (tel: 088 625868).
