St Mary Catholic Church (GPS: 5.84101, 118.11156) is one of the Roman Catholic churches in
Sandakan,
Sabah. Roman Catholic priests in the form of Franciscan and Jesuit missionaries have visited Sabah as early as the 14th century. However, it was only in the 19th century that mission stations were set up throughout British North Borneo, and at Sandakan, the St Mary's Mission was established. The mission was under the care of the Mill Hill Fathers and Sisters.
Until 1952, St Mary's was nothing more than an attap shed. The arrival of Rev. Fr. Anthony Mulders that year ushered in immediate changes, and by 1961, St Mary's has transformed from an attap shed into one of the most beautiful church buildings in town.
St Mary's Catholic Church continues to be a place of worship for the Catholic community in Sandakan. with numerous outstations missions being established in and around town.
