Bukit Gemok (GPS: 4.3209, 117.86933) is a popular hiking spot in Tawau. Located about 10 km from the town centre, Bukit Gemok is a 428-meter tall hill within the Bukit Gemok Forest Reserve, which covers an area of 445 hectares. The forest reserve was first gazetted in 1949, and regazetted in 1984.. It is a popular place for trekkers and runners. Even if you are not into these "challenging" activities, it is a good place to relax and discover at your own pace.
If you have the energy for it, you can hike up to the Titian Selara canopy walk, which required an hour of climbing to reach. The canopy walk is 231 meters long, making it one of the longest in Sabah. From the walkway, you can get a good view to Tawau town below and upclose views of the mighty trees that soar all around.
Getting there
Bukit Gemok is located on Jalan Kuhara, about 20 km from Tawau town. You will pass through oil palm plantations before arriving there. You can reach it by car or get a taxi to take you there (at around RM30). At the moment, there aren't any buses going this way. The Bukit Gemok Forest Reserve is open from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, and admission fee is RM1.00.
