Kelabit Highlands are a temperate forested mountain range in Sarawak. Located close to the border with Kalimantan, Indonesia, Kelabit Highlands are surrounded by soaring peaks that include Gunung Murud, which at 2423 meters (7946 feet), stand as the tallest mountain in Sarawak. Other peaks include Bukit Batu Buli, 2082 meters (6831 feet) and Bukit Batu Lawi, 2046 meters (6713 feet).

The Kelabit Highlands is a cluster of 14 villages, seven of which are in the Bario area and the remainer at the outskirts of the plateau. Within this isolated live the Kelabit, one of the smallest tribes in Sarawak.

Getting there

You have to fly in from Miri. There are two daily flights by MASWings from Miri Airport (MYY) to the Bario Airstrip (BBN). Hornbill Skyways also fly twice weekly to Bario. Check for details at the Miri Tourist Information Centre, tel: 085 34181 or at www.sarawaktourism.com

Visiting the Kelabit Highlands require a permit from the Pejabat Residen (Tel: 433205, Jalan Kingway, Mon-Fri: 8:00 am - 12:30 pm, 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm, Sat: 8:00 am - 1:00 pm) in Miri. You will need to present your passport and fill up a form with details of your intended visit.
