Kota Samarahan (GPS: 1.45971, 110.49917) is a town in Sarawak. It is the capital of the Samarahan District, which covers an area of 407 sq km in the Samarahan Division. Located just 40 km from Kuching, Kota Samarahan is a town of about 50,000 people.

Kota Samarahan was originally known as Muara Tuang. Until as late as the 1970's, it could only be reached by the river. The construction of a 25-km road linking it to Kuching accelerated its growth, and with the expansion of Kuching itself, Kota Samarahan is fast becoming a satellite town or suburb of the state capital. The main economic activity of the town centres on agriculture. Lately however, it has been made the site for higher education in Sarawak. Among the institutions of higher learning located at Kota Samarahan include Universiti Malaysia Sarawak, Universiti Teknologi MARA, Tun Abdul Razak Teacher's Training College, Industrial Training Institute Samarahan, Kota Samarahan International Private School and Dato Traoh International School. Technology Park Sarawak and Sarawak International Medical Centre are also located here.

Getting there

Kuching-Kota Samarahan Expressway (Route 8302) is the main artery linking Kota Samarahan with the state capital. It is just 10.3 km in length.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
