Limbang (GPS: 4.75503, 115.00814) is a town in Sarawak. It is the capital of the 3978 sq km Limbang District in the
Limbang Division.
Limbang was originally part of Brunei, but was annexed by Charles Brooke, the 2nd Rajah of Sarawak in 1890 despite strong protest from Brunei. It is located surrounded by Brunei on both the east and the west. Going west, the road reaches the checkpoint at Tedungan, while going east, the road reaches the checkpoint at Pandaruan. Both checkpoints are on the border with Brunei.
The involuntary cession of Limbang to Sarawak split Brunei into two parts, with Brunei-Muara, Tutong and Kuala Belait to the west of Limbang, and Temburong district to the east.
Visitors to Limbang are usually those on transit to get somewhere else. This is the terminus of the
Headhunter's Trail, so trekkers from
Gunung Mulu National Park arrive here at the end of their trek.
