Semenggoh Wildlife Rehabiliation Centre is a wildlife centre 32 km to the south of Kuching, Sarawak. It was set up to rehabiliate animals that are confiscated as well as those that have become incapacitated due to prolonged captivity. The objective of the centre is to teach the animals living skills so that eventually they can be released back into the forest. In addition, the Semenggoh Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre conducts breeding programmes on endangered species and those within the brink of extinction. Finally, it serves as an education centre so that the general public can learn more about wildlife conservation.
The highlight of a visit to Semenggoh is the feeding time for orang utans. This is done twice a day, at 8:30 am and again at 3:00 pm. The animals will make their way to the feeding area by climbing through the tall trees overhead.
Apart from orang-utans, the centre also rehabilitates monkeys, honey-bears, and other animals they were orphaned or illegally captured,
Getting there
Take the Sarawak Transport Company bus no. 6, 6A, 6B or 6C and alight at the Forestry Department Botanical Research Centre. From there, follow the small road that leads to the centre. The fare is RM2.60 with the first bus going at 8:20 am in the morning and the last one at 1:30 pm. The last bus returns from Semenggoh at 2:30 pm. Taxi to the centre from Kuching will cost about RM30.
Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
