Wind Cave & Fairy Cave are two caves in the
Kuching Division of Sarawak. They are near to the town of
Bau, about 45 minutes from
Kuching.
Wind Cave is about 3 km outside Bau. The entrance is reached through a short trail. The end of the cave overlooks a running river. This is Sungai Sarawak Kanan, the right tributary that continues to form Sungai Sarawak. Wind Cave got its name from the windiness inside. The cave had been documented as early as 1865 by early spelunkers. Evidence of early habitation was discovered here, in the form of clay vessels and shells. During the gold rush of 1930's, gold miners dug deep pits inside the cave. Like the many caves in Sarawak, Wind Cave is inhabited by swiftlets and bats.
Fairy Cave is a cave at Batu Kapor area, about 8 km outside Bau. It is known locally as Gua Kapor. The cave, about 30 meters above ground, has plenty of stalactites and stalagmites that resemble human and animals. The Chinese have erected shrines and altars to their Taoist deities inside the cave.
