Istana Bandar (GPS: 2.85991, 101.44083) is the palace of the Sultan of Selangor in the old royal town of Jugra, in Kuala Langat District, Selangor. It is also called Istana Jugra and Istana Alaeddin, after the old royal town and the ruler who built it.

Istana Bandar is a sprawling palace complex with some 40 rooms. According to Jabatan Warisan Negara1, it was built by Sultan Alaeddin Sulaiman Shah, the 5th Sultan of Selangor, in the year 1899. It was built of bricks and mortar, while the doors and stairs were made of chengal wood. In addition to Malay architectural design, the palace also bears Indian and Chinese architectural elements. The roof is tiled with Indian roof tiles. At regular intervals are spires resembling those of Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad in Kuala Lumpur. Chinese artisans were engage to do the carvings and sculpturing on the walls, and these bear Chinese influences.

Although Istana Alam Shah in Klang was completed in 1905, Istana Bandar in Jugra was where His Royal Highness lived, with his consort Hajjah Safiah, until his demise in 1938. It was also here that Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah was born in 1926. Sultan Salahuddin became the 7th Sultan of Selangor (or 8th, if counting Sultan Musa Ghiatuddin Riayat Shah who was installed by the Japanese Occupation) and the 11th Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia.

Istana Bandar was vacated after the seat of adminitration for Selangor relocate to Kuala Lumpur.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
