Istana Bandar (Istana Alaeddin), Jugra (6 July, 2016)
Istana Bandar (GPS: 2.85991, 101.44083) is the palace of the Sultan of Selangor in the old royal town of
Jugra, in
Kuala Langat District, Selangor. It is also called
Istana Jugra and
Istana Alaeddin, after the old royal town and the ruler who built it.
Istana Bandar is a sprawling palace complex with some 40 rooms. According to Jabatan Warisan Negara
1, it was built by
Sultan Alaeddin Sulaiman Shah, the 5th Sultan of Selangor, in the year 1899. It was built of bricks and mortar, while the doors and stairs were made of
chengal wood. In addition to Malay architectural design, the palace also bears Indian and Chinese architectural elements. The roof is tiled with Indian roof tiles. At regular intervals are spires resembling those of
Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad in Kuala Lumpur. Chinese artisans were engage to do the carvings and sculpturing on the walls, and these bear Chinese influences.
Although
Istana Alam Shah in Klang was completed in 1905, Istana Bandar in Jugra was where His Royal Highness lived, with his consort Hajjah Safiah, until his demise in 1938. It was also here that
Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah was born in 1926. Sultan Salahuddin became the 7th Sultan of Selangor (or 8th, if counting
Sultan Musa Ghiatuddin Riayat Shah who was installed by the Japanese Occupation) and the 11th
Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia.
Istana Bandar was vacated after the seat of adminitration for Selangor relocate to
Kuala Lumpur.
