Crossing Sungai Selangor (7 July, 2016)
Sungai Selangor is one of the major rivers in
Selangor. The river starts at its catchment, which is today the Sungai Selangor Dam, and empties into the
Straits of Malacca at
Kuala Selangor. It is one of those rivers that flow entirely within the state of Selangor. Sungai Selangor draws its water from the dam, which is fed by a number of rivers including Sungai Sengloi and Sungai Kul.
Sungai Selangor flows through a landscape dotted by lakes on both its sides. As it enters the lowlands, Sungai Selangor begins to meander, creating a number of oxbow bends, including one at Kuala Selangor, before it discharges into the sea.
The lowland banks of Sungai Selangor is lined with mangrove swamps. These are a noted habitat for fireflies, with
firefly cruises being a local tourist attraction, particularly at the riverside villages of Kampung Kuantan and Kampung Bukit Belimbing.
