Zoo Negara (GPS: 3.20802, 101.75745) is the national zoological gardens of Malaysia. It is located in Ulu Klang, in the Gombak District of Selangor. Zoo Negara is home to over five thousand animals covering close to 460 different species. It is managed by the Malaysian Zoological Society, a non-governmental organisation.
The history of Zoo Negara goes back to 1956, when the Malayan Agri-Horticultural Association set up a mini zoo. This led to the idea of setting up a proper full-fledged zoological garden, and a site at Ulu Klang was selected by the Federal Government for the project. Zoo Negara was officially opened to the public on 14 November, 1963, by the first Prime Minister of Malaysia (then Malaya), the late Tunku Abdul Rahman.
