Chukai (GPS: 4.23017, 103.42589) is a town in the southern part of Terengganu. It is the administrative centre for Kemaman District, and is also called by the name Kemaman. The town as an estimated population of 160,000 as of 2009.
The name Chukai means taxes in Malay. It got that name because it is the site of the river tax office on the Kemaman River. In the old days, goods passing through the town on the river has to pay taxes here. Today Chukai has transformed itself into the regional commercial hub, taking advantage of its proximity to the oil town of Kerteh. The Kemaman Port is also the centre for regional fishing as well as supply base for the oil rigs along the coast.
Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
