Kuala Besut (GPS: 5.83017, 102.56423) is a small town in the northernmost part of Terengganu. Also known simply as
Besut, the town is at the mouth of Sungai Besut, a short distance from the border with Kelantan. The town is the administrative centre for
Besut District.
Kuala Besut is served by Federal Route 189 and Federal Route 84. It is a fishing village. The fisheries department has a wharf at Kompleks Perikanan LKIM Kuala Besut.
Kuala Besut is best known as the seaport for trips to the East Coast Islands of
Pulau Perhentian and
Pulau Redang. As such, the town has many travel agencies offering boat trips and hotel accommodation in the islands. Many of these can be found at the tourist centre, Terminal Pelancong Besut.
Place of interest near Kuala Besut is Pantai Air Tawar. Localities in Kuala Besut include Kampung Teluk Bayu, Alor Peroi, Kampung Alor Pisang, Kampung Alor Jejawi and Kampung Air Tawar. The next town after Kuala Besut is Kampung Raja.
Most people know of Kuala Besut as the gateway to the Perhentian Islands. Most people stop over here for a meal before heading off to the islands, or linger here on their way back before heading home.
