Malaysian Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Penang is believed to be the earliest chamber of commerce of the Indian community to be established in Malaysia. It was founded in Penang in the 1920's by members of the Indian merchantile community. The community is involved in the trading of spices, rice, textile and other products.
The founding members of the organisation include merchants in the
Little India part of George Town, among them Purushottamdass Patel, Himatlal Bhatt, Shivashanar Joshi and H.A. Tyebkhan. The organisation was originally known as the Indian Chamber of Commerce, Penang. It functioned until the Second World War, a time of great upheavel to all the people in Penang, the Indians not excluded.
Today the Malaysian Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Penang, continues to seek opportunities for the Indian community to participate in areas of economic enhancement and development, in Malaysia and particularly in Penang. Its office is located at 119-B
