Malaysian Red Crescent Penang Branch, Grove Road, Penang (31 May 2012)

The
Malaysian Red Crescent Penang Branch, or
Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah Cawangan Pulau Pinang, is a private humanitarian institution in Penang. It is based at the Malaysian Red Crescent Society Penang Branch Headquarters at
Grove Road. It is located next to the
St John Ambulance of Malaysia, Penang.
The Malaysian Red Crescent Society Penang branch was established in 1950, becoming the first in Malaya, though preceded by branches of the similar entity established in 1948 in British North Borneo and Sarawak. The Malaysian Red Crescent Society was born out of the British Red Cross Society, which itself traces its roots to the International Red Cross and Red Cross Movement founded in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1863.
From its beginnings at the British Red Cross Society, the institution had underone several name change. From 1957, it became the Federation of Malaya Red Cross Society. When Malaysia was formed in 1963, the organisation became the Malaysian Red Cross Society. It changed its name to the Malaysian Red Crescent in 1975 and adopted the Red Crescent logo, which was first used by International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) volunteers during the war between the Ottoman Empire and Russia in 1877-78. First adopted in 1929, it is today used by some 33 Islamic countries.
