Lintang Pasar, Dato Kramat, Penang (13 January 2014)
Market Cross, or
Lintang Pasar, is a minor road in the Dato Kramat area of
George Town, Penang. The road links
Dato Kramat Road with
Western Road, with a branch called
Nambyar Street. Many of the people who traditionally lived here were either Indians or Malays, as the area is between Dhoby Ghaut and the Malay settlements of Dato Kramat. Nevertheless, as with elsewhere on Penang Island, the Market Cross area has become more Chinese in the 20th century, as more Chinese moved in, buying properties developed in the area.
Market Cross got its name from the nearby
Dato Kramat Market. The market traditionally spills over to both sides of Market Cross. Today there are still some stalls on both sides of Market Cross, although the link with Dato Kramat Market has since been broken, as the market area itself has become reduced in size.
Market Cross serves as the road for people going between the
Penang General Hospital and the bus stop on Dato Kramat Road. This is because there are more bus routes serving the busy Dato Kramat Road compared to Western Road.
