Masjid Abdullah Fahim, Kepala Batas (22 July 2015)
Masjid Abdullah Fahim (GPS: 5.52052, 100.46396) is the biggest mosque in
Kepala Batas,
Seberang Perai Utara. It is located along Jalan Tun Hamdan Sheikh Tahir, next to the Vision City development. It was built at a cost of RM25 million. Construction began in June, 2009, and Masjid Abdullah Fahim opened to worshippers on
11 October, 2012. The mosque can accommodate 6,000 worshippers.
Masjid Abdullah Fahim was named after a 19th century Islamic religious teacher who was born in Mecca in 1870, at a place known as Shuib Ali, near the Masjid al-Haram. Abdullah Fahim's given name is Abdullah bin Ibrahim. His father, Sheikh Ibrahim bin Haji Tahir, was a religious teacher at Masjid al-Haram. He married a Malay woman and was granted two sons, one of whom being Ahmad Badawi, the father of former prime minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
Tuan Guru Haji Abdullah came to Malaya in 1925. Having left Mecca in 1922, he first relocated to
Pattani in
Thailand before moving to
Kedah and eventually settling in
Kepala Batas2, where he began his Islamic teaching ministry, including a stint in
Perak. On his return to Penang, he held religious lectures at Masjid Kepala Batas. Abdullah Fahim passed away at the age of 90 on 27 April, 1960.
