Masjid Al-Ittifaq, Sungai Nibong Kecil, Penang (3 September 2011)

Masjid Al-Ittifaq (GPS: 5.33283, 100.2871), also known as Masjid Sungai Nibong Kecil, is an old mosque that has been renovated and expanded a few times. It is located at Kampung Seberang Paya in Sungai Nibong Kecil. The area is now often regarded as part of the Bukit Jambul locality, being right next to the Bukit Jambul Golf Course.

Masjid Al-Ittifaq began as a small surau that expanded over time to become a full-fledged mosque. Unfortunately, as with many old mosques, the expansion has erased the original architecture, leaving it with a structure without any particular architectural style.

My visit to Masjid Al-Ittifaq

I paid a visit to Masjid Al-Ittifaq on 10 February, 2014. I had the pleasure of being received by Mr Hunis Che Ngah, who volunteers as the web administrator for the mosque. I arrived at 10:00 am sharp, and was shown around the mosque.

In front of the mosque building is an Islamic school building. It is called Sekolah Agama Madrasah Tarbiah Auladiah. It is not part of the mosque proper, but belongs to the Islamic Council (Majlis Agama Islam). The building is used to conduct religious classes. It was inaugurated on 12 December, 2013.

After we have cleansed our hands and feet, Mr Husni took me into the prayer hall. He explained the five daily prayers that Muslims perform, called the solat. These can be performed at the mosque or within a surau. On the wall of the prayer hall are digital clocks showing the various prayer times, as well as the time for dawn and dusk. In addition to the solat, Muslims are expected to come to the mosque for Friday prayers. On regular days, only two rows of the prayer mat are occupied by worshippers, but on Friday, the congregation often spill into the corridors. The worshippers are led by the Imam and they call face the direction of the Ka'aba, in Mecca.

I had a very nice visit to the mosque and am warmed by the hospitality. It is nice to be reminded that Muslims are gracious people and that people of different faiths can actually live together happily.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
