Masjid Jalan York

Masjid Jalan York (8 March 2009)


Masjid Jalan York is a small mosque along York Road. It is located by the banks of Sungai Air Terjun, on the opposite side of the road from the Dhoby Ghaut Temple, with the Penang General Hospital not far behind it. Its architecture provides an indication that the mosque must be quite old.

I speculate that it must have first been built some time in the mid 19th century, if not earlier, for the Muslim community that dwelled along the banks of Sungai Air Terjun. Over time, the river became shallower and transportation by road superceded the use of rivers as a form of transportation.

Masjid Jalan York is quite beautiful and rather under appreciated, judging from the many high rise buildings coming up around it.

Getting there

Take Rapid Penang Bus 201, 202, 203 and U204 to Jalan Air Itam and then walk from Jalan Air Itam to Jalan York. Masjid Jalan York is on the right side of the road, about 50 meters from the junction.
