Masjid Jamek Al-Hidayah, Bukit Mertajam (10 December 2016)
Masjid Jamek Al-Hidayah (GPS: 5.36805, 100.41931) is one of the major mosques in
Bukit Mertajam. It is located along Jalan Baru, the main road connecting the town with
Butterworth. The present structure was built at a cost of RM2 million and was completed in 2006.
The site of Masjid Jamek Al-Hidayah was formerly that of Masjid Jamek Jalan Baru. The first mosque to be built on that site dates back to the early 1940s. Since then, the mosque has been rebuilt a few times, with the present being the fourth building on the site. The mosque committee obtained a federal allocation of RM1.6 million, and raised the balance through on their own.
Masjid Jamek Al-Hidayah is able to accommodate 1,800 worshippers. It is much larger than the previous structure which could only take 800 worshippers. A specially imported wooden screen is installed to segregate the prayer area of the men from the women. The arches are decorated with Islamic motif. These act as air-vents to allow good air circulation within the mosque.
