Masjid Jamek Batu Maung (7 February 2018)
Masjid Jamek Batu Maung (GPS: 5.28125, 100.28372) is a new mosque along
Jalan Permatang Damar Laut, in
Batu Maung, Penang. The mosque was completed in 2016. Construction cost was RM3.7million of which RM3million was funding from the state government while the remainder was donation from the general public. The new mosque can accommodate 1,000 worshippers at any one time.
The new Masjid Jamek Batu Maung replaces the old mosque. According to the people I spoke to when I visited the mosque, the original building is over seventy years old. Unfortunately they were unaware of its history.
The Masjid Jamek Batu Maung has a more recent annex built about a decade ago. The old and new mosque buildings stand side by side. In front of the mosque is a Malay cemetery, which is part of the mosque compound.
