Masjid Jamek Sungai Gelugor (1 September 2008)
Masjid Jamek Sungai Gelugor (GPS: 5.37088, 100.31044) is an old Malay mosque in
Gelugor. It is the village mosque of the Malay settlement of Sungai Gelugor, which is one of the older settlements on the island.
Although there is no proof yet, Masjid Jamek Sungai Gelugor may have been one of the mosques that was built by the Minangkabau settlers headed by
Dato Jenaton, whose grave is in
Minden Heights. The early Minangkabau settlers established the settlement in Gelugor predating the arrival of Francis Light. They engaged in regional trades while establishing ties with the royal family of Kedah, which ruled over Penang Island at that time.
