Masjid Jamek Shaik Eusoff (15 December 2008)
Masjid Jamek Shaik Eusoff (GPS: 5.41294, 100.31146) is an old Malay mosque in the
Dhoby Ghaut district, off
Dato Kramat Road. It is located near the junction of
York Road, Dato Kramat Road and
Jalan Air Itam. Masjid Jamek Shaik Eusoff traces its history to the late 19th century, as the area was a Muslim settlement with communities of Malays and Sumatrans. They lived alongside the Indians who are in the laundry business, hence the place being known as Dhoby Ghaut.
The historical Masjid Jamek Shaik Eusoff has been expanded and renovated a few times. Alas, the renovations have not been sympathetic to the beauty of the original mosque building, resulting in a plain, characterless facade facing the main road. However visitors exploring the compound of the mosque will be rewarded by the sight of its lovely wrought iron grills which date from the early part of the 20th century.
