Merchant Hotel (GPS: 5.42107, 100.33352) is a hotel along Penang Road in George Town, Penang. It is at the junction of Penang Road and Muntri Street. A new management has resulted in a total makeover of the hotel, which now spots a new logo and signage. It reopened on 1 May, 2015.
I paid a review visit to Merchant Hotel on 14 July, 2015, and was warmly received and shown around. On the ground floor is a cafe and lounge. The hotel is not very big but tastefully decorated. There are vases and baskets of flowers all over the place, which brightens up the hotel. I learned from the manager that the owner of the hotel loves flowers. The presence of flowers at many corners certainly makes the place look more homey and cosy.
Merchant Hotel offers various types of rooms. Their flagship is the Executive Room. Then there is the Deluxe Double and Superior Twin. Some of the rooms are connecting rooms, for the benefit of those travelling in a group. The hotel also has a Ladies Floor for the privacy of woman travellers.
25 February, 2017
I had the opportunity to review Merchant Hotel Penang as soon as it underwent restoration, and a change in management, a little while ago. The people there were very nice and hospitable in showing me around, to see their guest rooms. It's a nice, cosy hotel, and as its name suggest, geared for business travelers. There's a guest car park which can be entered via Leith Street.
Checking the prices on Agoda for 25 Feb 2017, I see that there is presently a low rate of just RM137, quite a steal, considering the usual rate is RM218 (the rack rate is RM488, I wouldn't recommend paying that.) Of course, this is just a snapshot from today, and rates may change again. I recommend checking once more when you are planning your trip.
I have not done a hotel stay or food review here, so I cannot comment on that. But having seen the guest rooms at Merchant Hotel, I see that they are all well furnished and comfortable, and so I have no problem recommending Merchant Hotel.

About this website
Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.
While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
