Proposed Merdeka Park

Merdeka Park is a public park proposed by the George Town Special Area Plan, to be sited off the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway, on the southern part of George Town. The park covers 0.32 acres and sit on land reclaimed in the past decade from the former site of the Koay Jetty.

Appreciating the Historic Significance of this Site

The Merdeka Park site is one of the most recently reclaimed part of the George Town shoreline. The Koay Jetty of the Hui minority people used to be located in its vicinity. The jetty was demolished - despite a vocal campaign to save it - and the land redeveloped for high-rise public housing. The proposal of a public park in this area brings back some greenery for public enjoyment.
