Mount Erskine Cemetery Pillboxes

Pillbox A, Mount Erskine Cemetery (17 February 2022)

Mount Erskine Cemetery Pillboxes are small bunkers built during World War II that are located within the Mount Erskine Cemetery. There are at least four such pillboxes that have been found. Two of them are on high ground at the Mount Erskine Cantonese Cemetery, while another two are located to the immediate east of Jalan Mount Erskine. For purpose of identifying their location, I will pinpoint them in the map below.

I have seen at least three of these pillboxes in the company of my friend Michael Rawlinson. These I photographed on 22 July 2015. I suppose there are probably even more. There are at least another two on the upper part of the slope of the cemetery, at the edge of Hong Seng Estate. I returned to the Mount Erskine Cantonese Cemetery on 3 April 2024, with my second cousins Freddy and Benny Tye and Teoh Ewe Cheng, to look for the site of our great grandfather's tomb, and in doing so, we visited three of the pillboxes.
