Murtabak (6 October 2012)
Murtabak is an Indian Muslim stuffed pancake that is popular in Penang, particularly in Indian Muslim nasi kandar stalls. The dish is of Arabian origin, from places such as Yemen and Saudi Arabia, but is now common in Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. The name murtabak, also written as mutabbaq, comes from Arabic, meaning folded. This refers to the layers of dough that makes the bread.
Murtabak is usually stuffed with mutton, though in Penang you can find those with chicken or beef. The pancake is served with a curry dip which you can also drench over the pancake. The dish also comes with pickled onion.

You can find Murtabak in most nasi kandar restaurants in Penang. On my food map below, I point out all the locations I have come across, and will add to it from time to time. The numbered pins correspond to the list below the map.
