Gawdawpalin Temple, Bagan

Gawdawpalin Temple, BaganGawdawpalin Temple, Bagan (24 November, 2003)

Gawdawpalin Temple is located near the Ayeyarwady River in old Bagan. Gawdawpalin Temple was built in the 12th century by King Narapatisithu, but only completed by his successor King Nadaungmya (also written Nandaungmyar, Nantaungmya and also called King Htilomino, 1211-1234). The style is Bamar, similar to the Thatbyinnyu Temple.

Gawdawpalin Temple is a 12th century Burmese temple near the bank of the Ayeyarwady River in Bagan. According to Bagan scholar Paul Strachan, the name Gawdawpalin means "throne on platform to which respect or homage is paid." It is believed that the temple was the venue of the traditional ceremonies honouring royal ancestors. Another explanation, wrapped in myth, is that King Narapatisithu had been so full of pride that the eminent monk Panthagu Mahathera fled to Sri Lanka for six years in protest. The king persuaded him to return and paid him honor and homage on the spot where Gawdawpalin stands.

Gawdawpalin Temple suffered structural damaged during the 1975 earthquake. The sikhara and stupa, which previously reached 60 m (200 ft) collapsed during the quake while a huge crack appeared in the two-storey main hall.
