Chauk Htat Gyi Pagoda (GPS: 16.81172, 96.16374), also written Chaukhtatgyi Paya and Kyaukhtatgyi Pagoda, is a Burmese temple in Yangon, Myanmar. Located at Shwegondaing Road in Yangon, it houses a colossal reclining Buddha statue. The Chauk Htat Gyi Buddha measures 70 m (230 ft) long. The present statue is a rebuilt.

The original Chauk Htat Gyi Buddha statue was built in 1907 by Sir Hpo Thar. It suffered damage due to the elements over the years. In 1957 the original statue was demolished and a new one built in its place. The new statue was completed in 1966 at a cost of US$70,000. Construction cost came mostly from donations.

A tazaung (pavilion) shelters the Chauk Htat Gyi Buddha from the elements. There is also a monastery near the pagoda that accommodates over six hundred monks. The entire cost of maintenance is also covered by donations.

When we were at the Chauk Htat Gyi Buddha temple, we saw that the temple was under renovation. We met up with the workers involved in the job and took some photos of them. One of the workers have very interesting tattoos on his body.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
